Why do Japanese train stations have jingles?

If you have travelled to Japan, you would have heard jingles play on the train platforms. In the past, bells and buzzers were used. The jingles later took over as a more pleasant way of letting commuters know that the train doors are about to close. These jingles, also known as Eki Melo (駅メロ), vary depending on the station and are composed by different composers.

The Eki Melo also take into consideration the area around the station. For instance, Maihama station is located near Disneyland so tunes like “It’s a Small World” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” can be heard at the station.

Takadanobaba is the birthplace of the popular anime, Astro Boy, so the station plays the theme as the station’s jingle.
