Who composed the station jingles on the Yamanote Line?

Hiroshi Shiozuka (塩塚博) is one of the composers of the station jingles, or Eki Melo (駅メロ), of the Yamanote Line. His work was influenced by his exposure to classical music at a young age. According to an article he wrote, his father liked classical music and played it for him before he was even born. When he was later approached to compose melodies for JR stations, he wanted to introduce “logical storylines for the 10-second melodies, something which previous station jingles had lacked.” Station jingles take into consideration the surrounding area. Take a look at some other popular station melodies featured in Japan.

Originally, the melodies he composed did not have titles. He later used his initials (SH) to name them. His work SH1 plays at Tokyo Station and is featured in our EkiChains.

Another one of his melodies is the station jingle for the Yamanote Line at Tokyo Station. SH3 is featured in our EkiChains.

Other melodies composed by Hiroshi Shiozuka include SH2 used at Yūrakuchō station. SH5 plays at Tokyo Station on the Keihin-Tohoku Line
